There is something about gemstones that has always reminded us of sweets.
The colours, the shapes, the way light moves across a stone — gemstones can share some of the visual qualities that make sweets so captivating. Some are clear and glowing, while others are soft and milky, filled with natural inclusions or a velvety texture. Each has its own way of catching the eye.
And that feeling is where the Bonbon Collection began.
Inspired by Kohakutou (琥珀糖), the Japanese crystal candy known for its delicate, jewel-like appearance, Bonbon brings together two things that seem worlds apart: natural gemstones and confectionery.
Kohakutou is traditionally made from agar and sugar. As it dries, each piece develops its own crystalline surface, with subtle variations in texture, opacity and colour. Some pieces are translucent and glowing, while others have a softer, almost frosted appearance.
We loved that sense of variety.
So rather than choosing gemstones simply because they are clear or crystalline, we look for stones that capture something of the feeling of Kohakutou — their colour, texture, inclusions, softness or the way they interact with light.
The result is a collection that is colourful, a little unexpected, and perhaps just sweet enough.
A Little Collection of Gemstone “Sweets”
For now, Bonbon is intentionally small.
The collection currently consists of pendants, each built around the same signature silhouette. As the collection grows, we hope to explore more designs and eventually introduce Bonbon into other categories of jewellery.
But we wanted to start simply.
With the gemstones.
Each stone in the collection has been hand selected for a reason. Rather than choosing gemstones simply because they fit a particular colour palette, we look for stones that remind us of something sweet — a lolly, a confection, a flavour or even a particular summer memory.
The colours, textures and personalities are bright, playful and sometimes a little unexpected.
Some feel citrusy.
Some remind us of berries.
Some are cool and refreshing.
And some have a deeper, warmer character.
The Shape of Bonbon
One of the defining details of the collection is its shape.
For now, we have chosen gemstones in emerald, asscher and radiant cuts — all cuts that share the characteristic octagonal outline that first drew us to Kohakutou.
Their geometric shapes give the stones a crystalline quality, while the different faceting patterns allow each gemstone to interact with light in its own way.
Every Bonbon is set with four pairs of claws, giving the stones a little more structure while keeping the setting open and allowing the gemstone itself to remain the focus.
The setting is deliberately simple, yet classic.
The gemstone is the star.
A Palette Inspired by Lollies
Colour is probably the most playful part of Bonbon.
Rather than following a traditional gemstone colour chart, we chose stones according to the colours they reminded us of.
Think of the colours you might find in a lolly shop on a summer afternoon — bright citrus yellow, icy mint, berry purple, soft blue and warm cherry red.
The names followed naturally from there.
Glacé, Peppermint, Cassis, Citron, Cerise.
Each one has its own flavour.
And because we're working with natural gemstones, the colours are never quite as predictable as they would be in a box of sweets.
That is part of the fun.
Cerise — A Little More Than Cherry
One of our favourites is Cerise, featuring an orangey-red Malaya garnet.
At first glance, its colour brings to mind a deep red cherry — warm, juicy and slightly unexpected.
But the stone has another side.
While it is difficult to capture on camera, at certain angles, particularly when it catches the sun, flashes of orange fire appear within the stone. That warmer glow reminds us less of cherry and more of something golden — almost like golden maple syrup trapped within the stone. It is one of those details that becomes immediately apparent when the stone moves in the light, but is much harder to convey in a photograph.

And that is exactly the kind of gemstone we wanted for Bonbon.
A stone that gives you something a little different every time you look at it.

The Bonbon Collection is only just beginning.
We have started with pendants, but there are plenty more flavours — and plenty more ways to wear them — that we'd love to explore in the future.
